Our brand was starting to drift. Here’s what we did about it

by | Aug 25, 2025

I’ve spent most of my career helping other businesses sharpen their brand and articulate their value. But recently, I realised our own brand wasn’t where it should be.

Client work was strong. Projects were landing well. Yet when I looked at our current positioning, it felt too broad. Our website didn’t show the quality of what we deliver. And, if I’m honest, we were starting to sound like everyone else.

We were slipping into the trap we see all the time in the B2B world!

Why we had to reset: The B2B brand dilemma

If you sell something complex like technical consulting, precision manufacturing, enterprise software or mining services (or even marketing for those sectors):

❌ You’re not winning work with emotional taglines and flashy campaigns.

✔️ You’re working through month-long buying cycles, multiple gatekeepers and a decision process that’s equal parts logic, budget and trust.

Most B2B brands fall into one of two traps:

The ‘inward’ brand

Built on internal aspirations (“We are innovative!”, “We have great service!”) that are meaningless to buyers.

The ‘invisible’ brand

Skips brand-building altogether, leaning on word-of-mouth until that avenue is exhausted and growth stalls.

We see it everywhere:

  • Mining partners who haven’t touched their branding in a decade.
  • Engineering firms still trading on thirty-year reputations.
  • Tech companies whose websites read like product manuals.

The Workshop

We put ourselves through a full brand strategy workshop, the same way we would with a client. That involved asking the hard questions:

  • Who do we really want to work with?
  • What do our prospects actually want from a marketing partner?
  • Why would a business choose us over another marketer?
  • What proof do we have that we can deliver it on our promises?

The answers weren’t always flattering, but they forced us think again about what we stand for.

Redefining the MindMoB Brand

The reset gave us a chance to set a clearer framework for how we wanted to present ourselves. We needed a sharper way to differentiate and a stronger filter for the kind of work we want to take on. This led us to:

Our vision:

Giving great businesses a microphone to achieve remarkable things.

Our mission:

Helping B2B companies be seen, heard and chosen by the clients that matter most.

Our role:

Amplifying what our clients already do well and making their expertise visible in the market.

Values:

Championing greatness:

We want to work with businesses that deliver genuine value.

Elevating what matters:

We want to create messaging that influences real decisions.

Emphasising strategic impact:

We act with intent and focus on outcomes that truly matter.

Focusing on partnership integrity:

We operate as a trusted extension of our clients’ teams.

Putting it into practice

With the new core brand philosophy, we updated all our marketing material: proposals, presentations, LinkedIn, website. The difference was immediate.

  • Prospects understood our value faster.
  • Conversations with the right clients became easier.
  • Feedback confirmed that the shift was working.

When we launched the refreshed brand, we didn’t lead with “look at us.”

We said, “Here’s how we help people like you.”

Evolving every day

Our brand work will never be finished! Like our clients, we’re always changing. The difference is that we now have the foundation to keep us on course.

If your brand feels broad, safe or like it undersells the work you deliver, that’s seriously holding you back. Taking the time to reset is worth it. We know because we had to do it ourselves.

Start with these simple (but often difficult to answer) questions:

  • Who do you really serve?
  • What do they need from you?
  • What do you stand for?
  • How do you uniquely deliver value?
